How can you take advantage of time saving tools that automatically sent your blog posts to Twitter, FB, etc. without drowning your followers in repeat messages?
Janet, most people use a tool like Twitterfeed for automating a feed of their Blog posts to go to Twitter and Facebook. Every time you publish a new blog post it will feed the post out to the networks you have linked to it – Twitter, Facebook your fanpage and more. It is a great way to publicize your blog and in one step, saving you time.
With Twitterfeed, there is an option in the setup to add a short message at the beginning of the post, which many do. I recommend leaving this blank; especially if you publish blog posts often. The words in this lead message are the main words your readers on Twitter and Facebook will see – however if they are not there; the words highlighted would be the headline of your blog post. Rarely do blog writers use the same headline over and over.
When people read online they primarily scan – especially a twitter stream. If you setup lead words for each blog post, at a glance it could look like repetitive and duplicate posts. People will scan these first words and if they see several posts with the same words in them over and over (even if the ending words are not) – they may choose not to read your update or even make contact with you.
If it were only your blog headlines being fed in, the content would have variety.
Some will argue the lead words can help brand you – but I feel that the need for variety is more important in this instance. As long as you have unique headlines your blog posts will not be repetitive messages.
