Do you want more people opening your newsletters for your private practice?
Last week I shared some news on email marketing and tracking your stats. Today, I want to take it a little further and share some additional strategies and ideas on how to get higher open rates with your email marketing – meaning more people reading your emails!
As much as you think email marketing is not something you want to get into, there really are many benefits to using email marketing and it remains one of the best return on investment (ROI) of time and systems for any type of online marketing business.
When you are putting your newsletters together in your email marketing system, you do want to be planning some of the elements to help you get more people consuming the content you created for them.
You know me … I am always preaching that planning saves time and gets improved results, and it does in this case too!
Here are a few ideas to help you boost your open rates on emails and newsletters, and how to improve the ‘Know, Like, Trust’ factor so people develop that understanding that you have knowledge and services that can help them!
How to get more Opens and ROI with your Emails and Newsletters:
1. USE WELCOME EMAILS WISELY
Welcome emails are your first impression with new subscribers to your email marketing list. Make it count! It’s the same opportunity you have with people in person. One chance to make a good first impression!
You want to be sure your subject line for this email clarifies why they signed up [The eBook you requested is here] and the content should reiterate why they wanted this in the first place. Be sure to repeat some of what was on your lead generation page where they signed up.
You also want to make sure this goes out instantly with no delay! People expect that in this day and age. Do not disappoint or they may continue searching online for the item they thought could help them, and it might be your competitors.
2. HAVE A STRATEGIC SUBJECT LINE TO ENCOURAGE OPENS
The subject line is responsible for people opening, deleting or ignoring your emails. You always want it to invoke some curiosity so they open it up, and have the opportunity to read and consume what you worked so hard to write and send them.
When you have an offer or special deal in your newsletter/email, make sure the subject line reflects this. People have higher open rates when words related to a time sensitive deadline are used in the subject line.
Use emojis for emails you really want to stand out. Place them at the beginning of the subject line not the end so they can be seen. These are best used with your high value emails like special offers, launches and new services or programs.
You can plan to incite more people to open your emails by using specific words and formatting tools in your subject lines. Try using the year “2022” or words in [brackets] and words that have some kind of time urgency [5 days left, Expires today, Ends tomorrow]. All of these have been proven in studies to get higher open rates.
Think about the subject line before making the final decision on what it will be. Like blog titles, these often get finalized in the writing process once the article is written because then the message is clear and you know what it might take to encourage someone to open the email.
Never ever deceive people with subject lines. This will have you lose leads faster than you can shake your head.
3. RESEND THE EMAIL TO PEOPLE WHO DID NOT OPEN IT
This means resending your emails to the folks who did NOT open the first one.
This is typically done with a regular newsletter but can also be setup (with certain email marketing systems) to resend to autoresponder emails that do not get opened.
The idea is that by looking at the list in your reports of folks who did not open the email, most systems allow you to do one click and “Resend the email to Unopens.”
Your Email system will often start a new email (broadcast) when you do this and set it up to go to those who did not register as an “open”.
When to resend?
This can depend on your cycle for emails/newsletters. If it is a monthly one, you could resend 10 days to 2 weeks later. If bi-weekly, then do it the next week. If weekly, do it 5 days later.
PRO TIP Always resend your newsletters on a different day of the week. Change any date specific info that may have passed and EDIT THE SUBJECT LINE! This helps you reach people who may not normally be checking their email on that initial send date AND by having a different subject line it will always come in their inbox as a new email, not grouped with the earlier version they had not opened.
Resending emails is not an exact science as some inbox systems (Outlook, Gmail, etc.) can register an unopen when in fact it was opened, so there is a possibility that folks did get and open the first version. My theory on this?? It’s okay… with a different subject line many may think it is another email and not realize it was the same content.
Those are three added tactics you can factor into your email marketing activities to help you reach more people, engage more people and ultimately, get more clients booking into your practice or business or buying from you! We cover more of this in the Thrive Marketing Academy lessons on creating email marketing content but this can get you going with some basics to make some initial changes that can increase your open rates.
