Marketing your business online can be very frustrating.
I hear this all the time, and I get it. When you specialize in something and open a business, often that means your top skills and passion are in that area of specialty. And, unless marketing is your specialty area, it almost always means you must work hard to put on that marketing hat and get it done!
Today I want to share with you something many business owners don’t think about doing when it comes to their marketing.
You need to be your own email subscriber.
I know it seems silly, but you always want to be checking your own marketing and one way is to be sure you are on your own email list and getting your emails – as anyone else would on your email list.
I recommend the same thing for any lead magnets and follow up email sequences. Always test those out by signing up as anyone would and getting the emails the same as anyone would. This will ensure you:
- Get the emails before anyone else does.
- Have time to fix and update them if there are errors.
- See exactly what other people will and this proof often triggers new ideas.
Your email marketing system is one of your 10 online marketing foundations. Ensuring it is working as it should is important. This list is one of your top assets in your business. It is filled with prospects, leads, potential clients… making sure it is in working order is one of the marketing duties you need to have on your list of “what to do.” You own and control it. You must also maintain it and give it a checkup on a regular basis.
Here are a couple other ways to do some regular check-ups on your email marketing system:
A. Check your stats on each email sent. Not only should you be tracking these, but sometimes things happen, and when they do you may see a large number of bounces or other issues. This keeps you on top of things to know if you need to make a fix or contact support for help.
B. Check your signup process for all lead magnets at least once a quarter, if not once a month. The last thing you want is a sign-up process that is not working when people are looking to get your lead magnets and can’t because of an error in your system. I once had a client whose signup form was not working – she spent 6 months marketing it and no one signed up. She could not figure out why. A simple test of the signup told me what was happening.
C. Part of your stats to track and check on a regular basis should be your lead magnets. How many signups are you getting each month? This is another trigger … if people are not signing up and you are marketing it, then something may be amiss and you need to check it too.

Keep your business working by checking your email marketing system and more to make sure that everything is tickety-boo. After all, if some of these pieces are missing or broken, it is the same thing as locking the door to a business with a store or office and keeping potential customers out.
