Last week, Facebook announced the roll out of a new look to their timeline and much of it has been inspired by Mobile Design. With the use of user access skyrocketing on mobile devices, keeping a consistent look is key to ensuring customers can easily use the network on all types of devices.
BIGGEST PLUS – NEWSFEED
The biggest bonus I see for users is the change to the newsfeed and the new options available for more choices of lists for your news feeds – Most Recent, Friends, Groups, Following, Photos and then of course other topics like music, games etc. The Ticker on the sidebar will be gone, replaced by the new version of the newsfeed making a much more simple design and view with less clutter.
This really means that the stuff that is more important to you is what you will see. The lists will also be sorted in order of use – so if you never use games that will not show up very high in your feed.
BIGGEST CHANGE – IMAGES
The most visible change you will see is the images – they will be larger in your new feed stream than before. Design is important – visual is always because a picture can say a lot more, faster than words. I see this as a real kick that Facebook is watching what is happening on other networks like Pinterest and Google+ as well as Instagram.
What Should Business Owners Do?
Become more Visual. Learn to use more pictures and images in your content. People can read them faster and get the ‘gist’ of the message easily and they will be more prominent in the newsfeed, so use them.
Create good Content. People can now see the posts and updates by the businesses and people they follow. AND they will be in time – date order. If the user wants to stay on top of your content – they will see more of it now, and in a chronological order. This makes it more and more important that you create content of interest to your followers and people who like your page.
CONFUSION. Users have to figure out how to use the newsfeed in order to see what is happening – the content. Some of your content may need to be teaching people how to get the newsfeed.
NOISE. It may be noisier now in the newsfeed. This change seems to level the content and not factor in the Edgerank as much as before (I will be watching this one). This makes it more important to create good, eye catching content that will attract attention.
The change is being rolled out in stages, so get ready for by looking at your overall content strategy and maybe making a change to include more photos and images – that will be a big boost to start you off with this new change on Facebook.
