What do Business Leaders do on LinkedIn?

At the eWomen Conference I attended in Dallas, I took a class on Branding and Sales from one of the speakers and I got to ask a question of her during the session. My question?

What are the Top 2 things you do on LinkedIn?

She had mentioned that her favourite Social Media site was LinkedIn and that she gained a lot of business from it. Because of this, she spent a good 30-45 minutes every morning on LinkedIn…so I wanted to know what she was doing. Her answers are below.

What do Business Leaders do on LinkedIn?Top 2 Networking Tips for LinkedIn:

  1. Check out the People who viewed my profile and send them a message with a connection invitation: “HI XXX, I saw you on my profile and would love to connect.” Very simple, understated and easy to do. And, guess what she got back from many when she sent this? Invites to have a coffee – a face to face meet (if they were in her area). It is interesting how they took the word “Connect” to mean more than just on LinkedIn. She said she pointedly did not add the words “on LinkedIn” after it, in order to leave that very open as to what ‘Connect’ meant.
  2. The number two thing she did was visit some of the top websites where her target and ideal clients would find the information useful and would share, along with a comment and a link to an article. Again, not an intense activity to do but one your connections – especially target clients – would be interested in. (I would also add for you to always add your own commentary was noted too, which is something I teach. No matter what network you are on, if you are sharing something, tell people why – it adds so much more value to that update and the link.)

So, look at how you spend your time on LinkedIn. Try doing these two activities and see how results and reactions might change once you do. Let me know if these tips work for you too!
