When working with clients to build websites, social media profiles, or even with ongoing virtual assistant support, one of the first things I do at the beginning when we start out is to ‘Google’ them. I Google their business and even phrases someone would use to find them online – pretending to be customers looking for their type of help.
The results can be an eye opener to anyone. Sometimes it is like playing a game of Where’s Waldo! And there is a lot to learn from this as well. It might take research, but could very well help you make changes that also see you and your business come up more often and higher in these results.
Some of the factors to look at when you see the results are:
Are there all sorts of free directories in these results – directories the clients should be registered with?
What shows up as the top 10 items? Is the client in there? If not, who is? If competitors show before the client, let’s try to see what is different about their online presence compared to mine.
Does the client / business even register? Do any instances of their personal or business name show up and how? Check out what is bringing them into the results and optimize and work with that to make it happen more often.
By analyzing the results that show up in these searches, you can find many ways to enhance your own online presence whether it is with your BIOs, keywords, names, registering in directories, getting on Google Plus… Review what you find and determine if there are steps you can take to boost the results.
I actually recommend doing Google searches on yourself / your business at least once a month – there is always something to be learned from what you find.
Try doing this to see what ideas you can come up with to help market your business differently and if you need help with this, it is something I do in a Small Business Strategy session – we can always set up one of these sessions to review this information and brainstorm new ideas and plans as well – Plans to help increase your business and sales.
