I was reading about some of the most overused words on people’s LinkedIn profiles last week – and there was some very interesting advice in the article on ways to make your profile stand out more than everyone else’s.
You want your profile to pop – to be different than everyone else’s…so try saying these words in a different way. In some cases…showing your profile visitor how you are motivated or creative as opposed to just saying it.
What are some ways to make your LinkedIn Profile stand out?
- Try adding images on your LinkedIn profile to show people your creativity – upload your favourite book cover you created to showcase that ‘creativity’. Add words to the upload that explain why it is your favourite.
- Post updates that share some of your ‘expertise’ and advice in your area of speciality and post them on a regular basis – which does not mean every 6 months. If you are using LinkedIn as a networking channel or to find a job – make certain people know you are alive by posting content – and not all Sales content! Use the option to update a power point presentation through Slideshare that showcases the results of a campaign or program you were ‘responsible’ for. Add as much of the results into that as you can.
- Most importantly write a headline that is NOT your job title. My title does not say Virtual Assistant or Marketing Consultant – nor Owner Time on Task VA Services…it uses keywords but also describes a little of how I help clients. It says: Online Marketing Consultant – helping Small Business Owners build their business with more leads and sales.
I suggest you do a review of your LinkedIn profile – see what you can add to it or change that makes it stand out more from others in your field. Be a little creative and without using buzzwords or industry specific words others might not understand.
Think of who you are trying to reach with your presence on LinkedIn and add a little info in there that will appeal to them and be understood by them as well.
