Last month we talked about the importance of having an About Page on your website, especially if you are a service based small business owner. As the face of the business, people will want to be able to know more about you. So, now that you understand the importance of this page – what do you include in it?

Here are the Top 7 things I recommend you incorporate into your About Page:
- Your Name – I know it sounds silly saying this but you would be surprised how many people do not add their own name. Let visitors know who you are.
- A photo of you. With the global marketplace we do business in these days you may never get to meet some of your clients. Your photo will keep your face in their mind and remind them of the ‘who’ behind the name.
- Some of your ‘story’. Share why you started in the line of business you are in – especially if it is a big part of what you do. For many people the struggles we went through are why we have succeeded in business. Share this – it will resonate with people having the same issues and make them feel you know what they have been through. You understand them.
- Your history and education if this is important to your business and credentials. An interior designer or dietitian both have credentials – if this is the case with you make certain to allow for some content here to let the reader / visitor know about your skills and training.
- Call to Action. A way to reach out and contact you. This helps bring a call to action on the about page – important to do – and also gives people a one click way to reach out.
- Additional info about you. You never know what can create a connection for people. Dog lovers like other dog lovers, same as cats – having kids and a family can create a connection, so can a type of sport or hobby you participate in – it is amazing what clicks for some people.
- Bonus – Video. Video is a great way to get the ‘real you’ out there and a way to let people see who you are. Like the photo – it adds another dimension to what they know and feel about you.
The trick on the about page is to let people get to know you… all of you.
One colleague I know hosted her first ever webinar for a program she was offering. She had some technical issues, did not realize she was on the air and was swearing at the problem and the situation. (We’ve all done it) She finally got things going and apologized yet explained that is a part of who she is. She had a lady sign up for her services because she ‘totally understood’ her and felt that she was the person she wanted to work with. Go Figure!!
As I said – you never know what can make the connection or click for people checking you out, so be sure to include as much as you feel is relevant and tells your story.
So don’t be shy, go ahead and update your About page, and let me know how it goes in the comments below, or on my Facebook page.
