When you land a guest spot, this is your chance to shine!
A guest spot is an opportunity to get in front of a new audience and share your expertise, your brilliance, as I like to call it.
One of the top things I find my clients and students forget when it comes to guest spots is the marketing that you should be doing with these opportunities.
By guest spot, I mean a speaking opportunity, a podcast guest appearance, a TV or radio interview – any chance to get in front of a new audience and share your brilliance.
These marketing activities are an opportunity that many forget can help you build and grow your email list. Today, I want to share the way you can do that. Even if your “host” may not be as savvy as they should be and are not making as much out of the opportunity either.
Once you’ve been booked on a podcast, or to speak at an event, or even on a TV or radio show, you now have your moment in the spotlight where others will be listening to you.
You tell your friends, family and colleagues, and you probably also share it online to your community there. Maybe the host is posting online that you are speaking with them too.
But, have you ever thought… could I get some more ‘mileage’ out of this opportunity?
YES!
Often, I find folks – both host and guest – are not always taking advantage of every opportunity to promote the guest so that both host and guest benefit.

One of the best examples of this was a past client who had several guest spots on an online “TV series”. It was a place they hosted guest experts who would do videos and teach the viewers lessons to help them learn and grow.
The minute she mentioned she was doing this I was like …. “Yes! This is great! We can do this online, and tag them and promote it here, and link to their social media and cross promote this guest spot .”
Well, that excitement was short-lived when I checked them out online and saw they had zero online content and a small presence outside of the website, and that they were not even emailing their list of subscribers when a new episode published.
An online marketer’s nightmare!
When we sent an email with some ideas, they were like, “Wow, those are some great ideas, but we don’t have the time to do that. ”

So, here’s the thing… you may encounter this – a guest spot with a host who is not much into marketing that guest spot. It may turn into something you should do on your own.
Here are a few steps to think about that can help both sides of this partnership so that each one might grow their online community, email list and even client list! But, if you have to go it alone then do it!
- Be prepared with a short BIO of you. Always be ready when someone asks for a short BIO and have a version ready that you can make a couple edits to in order to customize it for the guest spot and send it off.
- Be prepared with an offer. Even if only a simple offer of a lead magnet. Add this to your BIO. Be prepared to slide it in there somewhere when you are talking and position it as a gift to the listeners/audience. AND have a simple URL to share – i.e. PepperItMarketing.com/streamline. This is the main way you will get more leads on your email list.
- Ask when the appearance will be live online. Then make sure you know where to find it and promote that link to your online audience and community. Even if the host does not. Do not wait for them!
- Promote your guest spot. This means telling your email list about it, your social media community. Share a link, tell them what you discuss on the guest spot, the benefit they will get by listening in, what they will learn and how it can help them. And, as long as they stay relevant, you can share them in the future too. Just change the wording if necessary so it does not read “Last week I was…” and make it fit the moment. (Another reason why saving any content you create for online marketing is important – Repurpose it!)
- Promote your Host! Yes… even if they do not! Share your excitement about talking with them, talking to your audience (if it was a speaking gig) and TAG THEM! This means doing a little research and finding their social media profiles, connecting and then adding them and tagging them when you promote this online.
- Share your Hosts promos too. If they do happen to promote your guest spot online then tag onto it! Share the content on your own social media channels.
- Add to a “Media” page on your website. Yes, even podcast guest spots, mentions in the news, magazines and speaking gigs are considered media for you. Add this to a page on your website and it helps build your credibility when someone is looking to offer you a future guest spot. Here is an example of one of my clients’ media pages – https://marcird.com/media/. Whenever there are new guest spots, appearances etc, we always make sure to update her media page.
All of these steps are ways to get your name out online to new people, shared in front of new audiences and even having those who know you learn more from and about you. Sharing those guest spots, especially if they are on a page where your host has placed some information about you and links to your website, are a great way to get new leads on your email marketing list too.

These are a few ideas to help you the next time you have a guest spot somewhere to share your brilliance, so make sure you put these steps in place and get the most you can out of your opportunity!
