Reaching out to people on Social Media is important for your online marketing.
It can help you build your online community as well as traffic to your website, leads and ultimately sales. I attribute the difficulty people have today, to the changes in social media I have been noticing over the past two years. These changes are not coming strictly from new tools and program upgrades and changes, they come from changes in how people are using social media.
Ten years ago, I was just starting to use Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn as a part of my business marketing toolbox. How people use these tools has shifted from back then – a full 180 degrees. The creation of Snapchat and Instagram, among other social media newcomers, and combined with the increased use of mobile phones and devices have all transformed how people use the social media channels.
A lot of the changes can be attributed to the main purpose of people using the social media channels and what they “do” on them now.
Advice I have given clients since day one is to use the channels where your ideal clients hangout. But as algorithms have changed, this also means that we have to change what we do to use social media for business.
The algorithm changes also mean how our clients use the networks continues to shift as well, and frankly if businesses do not make changes too – we could be missing the boat. Missing the boat means wasting time and money and losing out on opportunities.
I used to say that social media was “Connections without Expectations” which rings true to this day. Just because I suggest (or anyone) that you do in a certain way to build more leads as an example, does not mean people will respond as I suggest they might. It’s their choice why they are using the social media channels and we cannot control that. We can make some predictions based on past behaviours and actions – and these predictions can help us leverage these tools, but you never know how people may react to your content, or you online.
Few people use Twitter, Facebook and even Linked In today the same as they did 5 years ago. Social Media Marketing and its use has changed.
The number one change I’ve seen is that people are choosing to use the networks differently, and it could be because there is more noise now. More users, more content and more messages coming at us all the time. People are overwhelmed.
For businesses, we need to go with the flow and change to adapt and keep current. Find new ways to reach these people, ways that catch their attention and connect with them.
Making changes in what we do online means changing our strategy and coming up with new ideas is how we can move forward. You need to be ready to embrace new ideas and trying new things with your content and online marketing. The same as I embraced all sorts of new ideas at the event I was at last week, I want you all to be ready to do the same.
